A day after speculations that Jitin Prasada may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a source close to him has said that he is ready to contest the Lok Sabha election from wherever the party leadership asks him to.
The sources said that Congress chief Rahul Gandhi met his close aide Jitin Prasada and offered him two options.
The first option was to contest from Lucknow seat where he would be fielded against BJP leader and Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
The party leadership has promised to give him a Rajya Sabha seat ticket in case he loses the Lok Sabha seat.
The second option is to contest from the Dhaurahra Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, which he does not want to. It should be noted that Prasada has already been fielded by the party from Dhaurahra Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh.
Jitin Prasada has said that the two seats close to Dhaurahra are Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur where the Congress is fielding Muslim candidates. As per the sources, Jitin came to know that a Muslim candidate from Congress was promised on the Dhaurahra seat after the alliance and it would turn into a Muslim versus Hindu contest on this parliamentary constituency.
The reports now say that he would either contest from Lucknow Lok Sabha seat or Sitapur seat.
The development has come a day after speculations were rife that Jitin Prasada will join the BJP. The Congress has recently fielded Jitin Prasada from Dhaurahra — one of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. However, sources said BJP have asked Jitin Prasada to contest from Lucknow.
Jitin was also unhappy at not being given a senior responsibility within the party, whereas his peers have been made PCC chiefs or in-charges in many states.
Hours after the speculations, Jitin Prasada said the rumours of him joining the BJP are “hypothetical”.
Sources said some senior Congress leaders including Jyotiraditya Scindia met Prasada on Friday afternoon in a bid to placate him and Prasada relented after senior party leader Ahmed Patel spoke to him later in the evening.
Today, when Jitin was asked where he would be contesting the Lok Sabha elections from, he said, “These are all speculation, party will come out with a list of candidates after the CEC. I don’t know anything about differences.”
