Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday tried to corner the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the issue of employment and jobs which were promised by it during the 2014 Lok Sabha election. He also slammed BJP on the failure of Make in India programme which also failed to generate employment.

“Narendra Modi became the prime minister of India five years ago. He made three to four promises to the people of India. He promised to wipe out unemployment and said will give jobs to two crore people every year. Do you remember? You forgot. He had said that the 56-inch prime minister will deposit Rs 15 lakh in each bank account,” Rahul Gandhi said.

He also asked one Gurmeet Nagpal whether he received Rs 15 lakh in his account. The answer was ‘zero’.

“Ok, you got zero. How much Narendra Modi took? Did you stand in queues during demonetisation? Did you see Anil Ambani, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi or Vijay Mallya in any queue? Tell me if this was a fight against black money, why the thieves were not seen in queues. Why were the honest people made to stand in the queues? Why Punjab farmers, labourers and businessmen were seen in the queues?” Rahul Gandhi questioned.

Rahul Gandhi also reminded BJP of the previous poll promise of waiving off farmers’ debts. “Did Narendra Modi waive off the loan? After five years a survey revealed that India has the highest number of unemployed. This is the truth of India. Fifteen people got the maximum benefit. Narendra Modi waived off Rs 555,000 crore loans of 15 people who were millionaires but not even a single rupee of India’s farmer, student and small trader was written off,” Rahul Gandhi said.

Rahul Gandhi pitched the NYAY scheme and said this plan will boost business. The Congress chief also challenged PM Narendra Modi for an open debate on the false promises the latter made in the 2014 polls.

“PM Modi is not talking about the issues of jobs these days. He talked about corruption. I asked him to discuss corruption with me. You have a 56-inch chest. I can go anywhere for a 15-minute debate. Narendra Modi is a coward; he cannot come for the debate,” Rahul Gandhi said.

He added: “I will ask four questions and Narendra Modi will not be able to show his face to Hindustan. Why you gave 30,000 crore to Anil Ambani? He is a bankrupt and not returning Rs 43,000 loan. Why you gave him world’s biggest contract? A 15-minute debate will make things clear. I will ask four questions which he will not be able to answer.”
